Dear visitors,
Today is a very special “Origins” episode. I wanted to share the story of Edwin D. Custodio Rivera. He was my practicing Sociology teacher during my first year at University Gardens High School. He impacted all of the student’s lives with his transparency, caring persona, and lively spirit. Thanks to this opportunity, I was able to learn that he had gone through a lot more than he ever expressed. He shared that his parent were addicts and incarcerated; therefore, he grew up with his paternal grandmother. He and his siblings were also separated early on and grew up in different homes and families. Additionally, he was the first to graduate from college in his household. To “Cuso” his grandmother and an elementary school teacher served as motivators for him to choose to pursue a career as a history teacher. He decided to retire and dedicate his life to auto-sustainable agriculture and economy.
“La vida es un reto constante, proceso sin fin, de crecimientos, conocimientos, experiencias y reflexiones. La vida es un método científico y es lucha toda. Desde que nací estoy enfrentando retos, saltando obstáculos, derribando murallas, destruyendo constructor, desaprendiendo y aprendiendo. Nunca me crié con mis padres o hermanos. Crecí solo y casi termino siendo otra víctima del sistemas recurrir de menor a la delincuencia juvenil.”
I hope his story serves as inspiration and motivation. It highlights how you can be dealt a bad hand of cards, yet you can still choose to go through that obstacle course and attain success and the life you desire.
